- Upgrading and expanding subject knowledge in a specialist area
- Developing an understanding of how science or maths works
- Developing an understanding of the key concepts and processes of scientific and mathematical thinking
- Promoting and developing independent learning skills
- Improving meta-cognitive skills and developing the ability of students
- Allowing learners to identify and address their own learning needs
Teaching Approach
The teaching approach is context-driven and enquiry-based, with problem-solving being at the heart of each session. Science and mathematics topics are approached in real-life contexts as far as possible in order to encourage students to think rather than simply accept knowledge, and to look at what may be familiar subject knowledge in a different way and therefore develop a better understanding of their subject. The sessions take a constructivist approach, requiring students to actively participate in their own learning, undertake research, solve problems and analyse data. This helps students to model the pedagogic approach that has been proven to facilitate learning in the classroom.
