iTeach is an online training programme for secondary teachers of maths, physics and chemistry in England, developed by Canterbury Christ Church University in the UK and Hibernia College in Ireland, and funded by the UK Government's Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA).
Developed to address the current shortage of maths and science teachers by providing a more accessible path to becoming a fully qualified teacher, many iTeach students are career changers with existing work and family commitments.
The iTeach programme offers a Postgraduate/Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
- 20 months full time
- 14-24 weeks of classroom teaching practice including one week in primary school
- Course delivered online and through live virtual tutorials
- Ongoing continuous assessment
- Participants fully funded by the TDA
- Suitable for practising educators as well as those wishing to enter the teaching profession
Note that all physics and chemistry students are required to initially study modules in general science (combined physics, chemistry and biology) before specialising in their main subject area. This is in order to ensure a solid knowledge base across all three subjects, as most schools will require teachers to teach general science up to Key Stage 3.
